Introducing Tax AI: Ask Anything About Indian Taxes
A free AI assistant built for Indian taxpayers. Chat about ITR forms, deadlines, refunds, regime choice, HRA, advance tax — and get a straight answer.
Filing taxes in India involves a hundred small questions. Which ITR form do I actually need? Is old regime still better for me? What is HRA exemption? When is the deadline for freelancers this year? Why is my refund taking forever? Do I need to file if I made a loss on stocks?
Each of these has an answer. Most of them have a good answer somewhere on the Income Tax portal, in a blog post, or inside a calculator. But getting to that answer means knowing where to look, and trusting what you find — which is exactly the part that makes tax season stressful.
Today we are launching Tax AI — a free AI assistant built into ITR Stats that you can simply ask. No form to fill. No sign-up. No jargon. Just type what you want to know about Indian taxes, and get a clear answer.
TL;DR
- Tax AI is live on every page of ITR Stats. Look for the floating Tax AI button at the bottom-right of your screen.
- What it does: a dedicated AI assistant for Indian taxes — ITR forms, deadlines, regime choice, refunds, HRA, advance tax, and more.
- Live now: ITR form selection, filing deadlines, old vs new regime, taxpayer-specific advice, income tax and HRA calculations, advance tax schedules, guidance for all 17 calculators, portal how-to guides (e-verify, revised returns, tax notices, Form 26AS), 3-year filing statistics and form mix trends, and refund delay analysis.
- It is free, needs no sign-up, and will never ask for your PAN, password, or bank details.
What Is Tax AI?
Tax AI is a conversational assistant that lives on ITR Stats and is dedicated entirely to Indian income tax. Think of it as a knowledgeable friend who has read every ITR form, every deadline notification, every rule change, and every dashboard on ITR Stats — and is happy to explain any of it in plain language.
You open it, you type a question, and it answers. If it does not have the confidence to answer something, it will say so and point you to the right page on the site instead of making something up. That last part matters a lot to us — we would rather Tax AI admit a gap than guess.
What You Can Ask Today
Tax AI now covers the questions that matter most during filing season — from picking the right form to understanding why your refund is delayed.
ITR form selection
ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, or ITR-4 — Tax AI walks you through eligibility based on your income sources (salary, freelance, capital gains, foreign income, multiple properties), whether you are a resident or NRI, and whether you qualify for presumptive taxation. When it needs more details about your specific situation, it hands you off to the ITR Form Selector — a 5-question tool that gives you a definitive answer in under a minute.
Filing deadlines and late filing penalties
All the important dates for the current assessment year, who each deadline applies to, what happens if you miss it, and how much the penalty is under Section 234F. Including the new Budget 2026 changes that split the July 31 deadline into July 31 and August 31 depending on your ITR form.
Old vs New tax regime
Which regime makes sense for your income and deductions, how the choice affects your ITR form, and when it is worth switching. Tax AI explains the trade-offs and, when you are ready to run the numbers, sends you straight to the income tax calculator.
Filing guidance by taxpayer type
Different taxpayer, different rules. Tax AI gives tailored guidance for:
- Salaried employees — Form 16, HRA, 80C deductions, LTA, standard deduction
- Freelancers and consultants — Section 44ADA presumptive, advance tax, GST linkage, business expense claims
- NRIs — residential status rules, DTAA, foreign income, Form 67
- HUFs — eligibility, tax benefits, which form to use, filing mechanics
Income tax calculations
Tell Tax AI your income and it computes your tax under both old and new regime for FY 2025-26 — with slab-wise breakdown, Section 87A rebate, 4% cess, and effective tax rate. Works for individuals and HUFs. If you do not specify a regime, it asks. For a full interactive breakdown, it links you to the Income Tax Calculator.
HRA exemption
Give Tax AI your salary and rent, and it computes your HRA exemption using the three-condition minimum test. It auto-detects metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad) and defaults basic to 40% of salary if not specified. For detailed scenarios, it sends you to the HRA Calculator.
Advance tax schedule
Tax AI computes your quarterly advance tax installments (Q1 through Q4) with due dates — 15 June, 15 September, 15 December, 15 March. It also tells you if your liability is below the Rs 10,000 threshold where advance tax does not apply. Full tool at the Advance Tax Calculator.
All 17 calculator guides
Tax AI can answer questions about and link you to every calculator on ITR Stats — Income Tax, HRA, Advance Tax, TDS, CTC to In-Hand, GST, SIP, SWP, PPF, FD, EMI, NPS, Lumpsum, SSY (Sukanya Samriddhi), HUF Tax, Income Percentile, and Gratuity. Ask it a question like "SIP of 10k/month for 10 years at 12%" and it will explain the concept and drop you into the right calculator.
Portal how-to steps
Need to actually do something on the Income Tax portal? Tax AI gives step-by-step walkthroughs — how to e-verify your ITR, download Form 26AS or AIS, file a revised return, or respond to a tax notice (143(1) intimation, 139(9) defective, 245 adjustment, and more). It will never ask for your PAN, password, or OTP — just clear instructions you can follow on the portal yourself.
Capital gains, derivatives, and senior-citizen rules
Tax AI now handles the trickier income types that show up on ITR-2 and ITR-3:
- Mutual funds - short-term vs long-term capital gains, indexation, dividend taxation, STT, and the FY 2024-25 changes to debt fund holding periods
- ESOPs - perquisite tax at exercise, capital gains at sale, listed vs unlisted treatment, and the cross-border nuances for vested options
- F&O trading - non-speculative business income, audit thresholds, set-off rules, and how 44AD applies (or does not)
- Crypto and VDAs - flat 30% under Section 115BBH, no set-off, no carry-forward, 1% TDS under 194S, and which schedule reports it
- REITs and InvITs - distribution component breakdown (interest, dividend, return of capital) and how each piece is taxed
- Senior citizen rules - 80TTB on FD interest, Section 207 advance tax exemption, and the higher basic exemption thresholds for 60+ and 80+
Filing statistics and form mix trends
Tax AI can now answer questions about how India files its taxes — 3-year filing volume trends (FY 2023-24 to FY 2025-26), processing rates, verification rates, refund volume growth, and form-by-form shifts. It knows, for example, that ITR-1 share has fallen from 42% to 38% as more salaried filers move to ITR-2 for capital gains, and that ITR-2 surged 34.7% in FY 2024-25. Ask things like:
- How many ITRs were filed last year vs this year?
- How has the ITR-1 vs ITR-2 split changed over 3 years?
- What is the current processing rate and verification rate?
- Has refund volume grown despite flat filing numbers?
Refund delays and CPC processing trends
If your refund is taking longer than you expected, or you are curious about why things are slow this year, Tax AI can walk you through what is going on — using the same live data that powers the ITR Stats dashboard. Questions it handles well:
- Is refund processing slower than usual this year?
- Why are ITR refunds getting delayed?
- How big is the current refund backlog?
- When are delays likely to start easing?
Recently Shipped
Since launch, Tax AI has expanded rapidly. Here is what went live in the first month:
Portal how-to guides Live
Step-by-step walkthroughs for the things you actually need to do on the Income Tax portal: how to e-verify your return, how to download your AIS and Form 26AS, how to file a revised return, and how to respond to a tax notice. Ask Tax AI something like "I got a 143(1) notice, what should I do?" and it walks you through the exact steps.
Filing statistics and form mix trends Live
Tax AI now covers 3-year ITR filing statistics sourced from the government e-Filing portal — volume trends from FY 2023-24 to FY 2025-26, processing and verification rates, refund volume growth, and form-by-form shifts. Ask things like "how has ITR-1 share changed?" or "did processing rates improve this year?" and it answers with actual numbers instead of directional hand-waving.
Six new tax knowledge areas Live
Tax AI's depth expanded beyond the salaried-default questions. New rule sets cover mutual fund taxation (capital gains, dividends, indexation), ESOPs, F&O trading, crypto and VDAs (Section 115BBH, 1% TDS under 194S), REITs and InvITs, and senior-citizen-specific rules (80TTB, Section 207 advance tax exemption, higher basic exemption). Ask things like "how is my crypto profit taxed?" or "do I owe advance tax if I am 65 with FD interest?" and the answer is grounded in the actual rule rather than a paraphrased forum post.
In-chat thumbs up/down feedback Live
Every Tax AI answer now has a small thumbs up / thumbs down right under the response. If something was wrong or missed the point, hit thumbs down and (optionally) drop a one-line note. The feedback flows straight into how we prioritise the roadmap below — which intents to deepen, which knowledge gaps to fill, and which phrasings to retire. No PII collected, no account needed.
What Tax AI Will Never Do
A few things are explicitly out of scope — by design, forever:
- Predict your exact refund date. Nobody can do that honestly, and we will not pretend to.
- Ask for your PAN, password, OTP, or bank details. Tax AI never needs these. If anything ever claims to be Tax AI and asks for them, it is not us.
- Give personalised investment advice. Tax AI can explain how a deduction works — it will not tell you how to allocate your money.
- Replace a Chartered Accountant. For complex cases, audited businesses, international tax situations, or anything that needs professional judgement, you still need a CA. Tax AI is here to cover the common questions, not the edge cases.
- File your return for you. Tax AI will guide you to the right form and explain what to do — the actual filing still happens on the Income Tax portal.
How to Use It
Tax AI is already running on every page of ITR Stats. Here is how to start:
- Find the button. Look at the bottom-right corner of any page on itrstats.in — there is a floating pill-shaped button that says "Tax AI". It glows softly so you will not miss it.
- Click it. A chat panel slides in from the right on desktop, or opens fullscreen on mobile.
- Ask anything tax-related. Type your question or pick one of the suggested prompts to try it out.
- Follow up naturally. Tax AI remembers the conversation, so you can ask "and what about freelancers?" without re-explaining the original question. Your chat even carries across pages while you browse.
- Click "New chat" any time to start a fresh conversation.
Why We Built This
ITR Stats has always been about making Indian tax data more accessible — live filing trends, refund tracking, processing stats, calculators, and guides. But the data is only useful if you can find your way to it. Every tax season we see the same questions repeated hundreds of times on forums and in our inbox, and most of them already have clear answers — the answers just are not reaching the people asking.
Tax AI is our attempt to close that gap. Instead of asking you to figure out which page on the site has what you need, it lets you ask the question directly and brings the answer to you. And when the answer needs more depth, it links you to the guide, calculator, or dashboard that has it.
We are starting narrow so we can ship something we trust. But the goal is bigger: a single place where any Indian taxpayer can get a clear, honest answer to any ITR question — without jargon, without gatekeeping, and without an agenda.

Tax AI will get things wrong sometimes. It will refuse a question it should probably answer. It will phrase things awkwardly. That is why we want to see what real people ask — to decide what to improve next.
If Tax AI does something weird or surprises you in a good way, tell us. You can reply on X (@itrstats_in) or connect on LinkedIn. Every piece of feedback directly shapes the roadmap above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — Tax AI is completely free, and the core assistant for common ITR questions will stay free. If we ever build paid features on top (say, for businesses or CA firms), they will be clearly separated from what is free today.
For Indian tax questions — yes. Tax AI is built specifically for Indian ITR filing and knows the current rules and deadlines. General-purpose assistants often mix up Indian and foreign tax concepts, or quote outdated rules. Tax AI also tells you honestly when something is out of scope, which we believe is safer than a plausible-sounding wrong answer.
It can. For anything important — filing decisions, large tax liabilities, audit cases — always cross-check with the official Income Tax portal or a Chartered Accountant. Tax AI is a starting point, not the final word. When we are not sure about something, we would rather refuse than guess.
Your recent chat is saved only in your browser so the conversation continues as you move between pages — click "New chat" to clear it. We keep anonymous logs of questions to fix bugs and improve the assistant, but we never collect your name, PAN, email, or any personal tax details.
No — Tax AI does not log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal on your behalf and has no access to your personal returns. It can explain general delay patterns and walk you through how to check your status on the official portal, but the actual lookup has to be done by you at eportal.incometax.gov.in.
Tax AI can help with ITR form selection and eligibility, filing deadlines and penalties, old vs new regime comparison, income tax and HRA calculations, advance tax schedules, guidance for all 17 calculators on ITR Stats, portal how-to steps like e-verification and responding to tax notices, 3-year filing statistics and form mix trends, and refund delay trends. It covers the full cycle from "which form do I need?" to "why is my refund delayed?"
Currently it is English only. Multilingual support — starting with Hindi, then Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali — is planned for after the core capability set is fully live.
Yes. On mobile, the chat panel opens fullscreen for easy typing and reading. The Tax AI button stays tucked away on the homepage until you scroll down, so it does not cover up the dashboard content.
Bottom line: Tax AI is a free, honest, India-first AI assistant for your ITR questions — from picking the right form, to portal how-to steps, to understanding why your refund is delayed. Try it out today, and help us decide what to build next.
