ITR Processing Weekly Update
Last updated: May 28, 2026 — weekly updates paused while the portal transitions to AY 2026-27
Weekly updates are paused. The e-Filing portal stopped publishing daily AY 2025-26 statistics on 1 April 2026 and resumed publishing on 25 May 2026 for AY 2026-27 only — at very low volume so far. Until either AY 2026-27 fills in or CPC publishes the next monthly AY 2025-26 update, there isn't enough fresh data to reconstruct a meaningful weekly view.
TL;DR — where things stand
- FY-end push (31 March 2026): CPC processed ~2.95 lakh refunds in a single day — about 10× the typical 5K–30K daily rate — to close out FY 2025-26 processing targets
- April 2026: ~1.5 lakh additional AY 2025-26 returns cleared as residual backlog clean-up (per CPC's monthly publication)
- Implied AY 2025-26 pending backlog at end of April 2026: ~13.5 lakh returns — derived from the last published portal figures, not a fresh daily reading
- AY 2026-27 filing season: opened 1 April 2026; portal began publishing AY 2026-27 numbers on 25 May 2026; volumes are still very small (~4.1 lakh e-verified) ahead of the 31 July due date
- Next concrete signal: CPC's next monthly publication
What the Last Published Figures Showed
The IT portal's final AY 2025-26 daily snapshot (recorded 31 March 2026) showed cumulative ~8.74 crore e-verified returns against ~8.59 crore processed, leaving roughly 15 lakh pending at end of March. CPC's subsequent monthly publication then reported approximately 1.5 lakh additional returns cleared in April 2026, leaving roughly 13.5 lakh implied still pending at end of April.
This is an upper bound on queue delay — some of the 13.5 lakh is held for scrutiny, refund verification, or pending additional information from the filer, not pure queue position. And because the portal does not publish updated AY 2025-26 figures after 1 April 2026, this is an inference from the last published numbers, not a fresh daily reading.
The FY-End Push and April Clearance
Two clearance events define the recent AY 2025-26 picture:
31 March 2026 — the last day of FY 2025-26: CPC processed approximately 2.95 lakh refunds in a single day. The typical daily processing rate through March 2026 ran 5,000–30,000, so the last-day push was roughly ten times normal volume — a deliberate close-out of FY processing targets.
April 2026: per CPC's monthly publication, approximately 1.5 lakh additional returns were processed as residual backlog clean-up.
For context on what CPC can do when it pushes hard: the all-time one-day record remains 6.97 lakh returns on 14 February 2026. The 31 March push wasn't a record day, but it was an unusually large clean-out for an end-of-FY date.
Why Weekly Updates Are Paused
This article was originally a weekly snapshot of AY 2025-26 daily processing data from the IT portal's success-enablers dashboard. Two things changed on 1 April 2026:
- The portal stopped publishing the AY 2025-26 success-enablers series.
- The series was reset for AY 2026-27, but the new series didn't begin publishing until 25 May 2026, and at very low volume.
Until either AY 2026-27 reaches enough volume to characterise a weekly trend or CPC publishes the next monthly AY 2025-26 update, there isn't enough fresh signal to reconstruct a meaningful weekly view. Projecting a clearance date from old March 2026 daily counters would be misleading.
What To Do If You're Still Waiting
If your AY 2025-26 return is still pending after the March-April 2026 clearance pushes, the next step is to check whether your return has a flag attached to it — not to wait for queue movement.
- Check the e-Filing portal for any notices — login → View Filed Returns → look for any Section 143(1), 143(2), or 139(9) notice. A pending notice blocks further processing.
- Confirm bank pre-validation — your bank account must be pre-validated for refund credit and PAN-Aadhaar linkage must be current.
- If still under processing after 9+ months — raise a grievance through the e-Nivaran tab on the e-Filing portal.
- If you haven't e-verified yet — e-verify immediately. Your timeline only starts after verification.
Reminder: the CPC helpline is 1800-103-0025 (toll-free). For most pending returns, however, the action lies on the filer's side (notice response, bank pre-validation) rather than CPC's.
When Updates Will Resume
We'll resume this weekly cadence as soon as either of these signals returns:
- AY 2026-27 daily data fills in enough to characterise meaningful week-on-week movement. Filing volume typically picks up in June-July ahead of the 31 July due date, so this is most likely to happen mid-to-late June 2026.
- CPC publishes the next monthly AY 2025-26 update. That will give us a concrete data point on backlog clearance to write about.
Until then, the page above describes the last known state. For live AY 2026-27 numbers as they fill in, check the dashboard.
